Chikankari – The Heritage Behind Oudhkari

Oudhkari draws its inspiration from the rich legacy of Chikankari, a timeless art form deeply rooted in the cultural history of Lucknow.

Chikankari derives its name from the Persian words Chikin or Chikeen, meaning embroidered fabric. This delicate and intricate embroidery gained prominence during the Mughal era, especially under the patronage of Noor Jahan, wife of Emperor Jahangir, who played a key role in popularizing this elegant craft.

The art flourished in Awadh when Asaf-ud-Daula shifted his capital to Lucknow in 1775, marking a golden era of culture, craftsmanship, and refined aesthetics. Over time, Lucknow earned the title of the “Paris of the Orient,” becoming a hub for artisans and connoisseurs of fine embroidery.
